CANDY AISLE, Even in a recession, new businesses that target niche markets do well and as a result, they’re popping up all over the place.
Case in point: Steveston’s new Candy Aisle, opened its doors in July and has doubled sales each week since.

When the recession hit, Nicole Allen, a long time technology recruiter in Vancouver, thought the time was right to flex an entrepreneurial urge she’s been nurturing for many years. The perfect opportunity presented itself when her partner Celia Tisdall, a 6-year officer with the Vancouver Police Department met a local candy store owner. Allen and Tisdall met with Jason, who was interested in franchising his successful Robson Street business. Soon, they struck a deal and Candy Aisle was born in a location just one street up from Steveston’s quaint fishing docks.
“We wanted to make the store really fun and really welcoming,” says Allen, a foxy 37 year old who has personally sampled every yummy treat in the shop and works out nine times a week to stay svelte. “It’s great, seeing the look on the kids’ faces when they come in here! Adults love it just as much. Everyone deserves a treat.”
From pink M&M’s to football sized Whirly Pops and scorpion suckers, over 150 different kinds of bulk candy and 50 flavours of Jelly Belly’s, the store is known for carrying the latest flavors but there’s always room for nostalgia (Sweethearts, gob stoppers, fizz, popeye candy sticks and Wonka treats!)
And the duo aren’t stopping with the storefront venture, they plan to extend their offerings to include candy buffets for weddings and birthday party catering. A Vancouver retail consultant says this move to diversify will help buffer the business as it gets off the ground during the end of the current recession. “Deb Viccars”
